Awards

In addition to awards for an outstanding body of work in prevention science [1990 Excellence in prevention of HIV, American Medical Association Award: HIV prevention among runaway and homeless youths], Dr. Rotheram’s initiatives include award-winning programs to train elementary school children in assertiveness and social skills (1986 Exemplary prevention model, American Psychological Association: Assertiveness training with elementary school children.) and an intervention to help hospital Emergency Room personnel prevent suicide in recent runaway youth (1986 Outstanding Mental Health Project for Children and Adolescents, New York State Office of Mental Health: Evaluation and triage of suicidal runaways. )

Also recognized as exceptional are her programs for teens: in addition to several exemplary model designations by the CDC and APA, the American Medical Association applauded Dr. Rotheram’s HIV prevention in runaways and homeless youth (1990 Excellence in prevention of HIV, American Medical Association Award: HIV prevention among runaway and homeless youths)Dr. Rotheram’s programs for HIV prevention have changed the way professionals and paraprofessionals serve at-risk populations. Nine of her interventions have been included in CDC’s Compendium of HIV Prevention Interventions with Evidence of Effectiveness. With this recognition comes the reality that her work becomes the industry gold standard for care because they represent more than 10% of the interventions encouraged through the CDC’s Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) strategy.

While pushing to bring science to vulnerable families throughout the world, Dr. Rotheram has also been recognized for making science approachable to families in her own community (2007 Family Coaching Clinics Project—one of three winders in Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Competition for Disruptive Innovations).

Bringing change to the world of psychology and prevention also means training subsequent generations of clinicians and researchers, and Mary Jane has twice been named an outstanding mentor (2009 Outstanding Mentor Award- American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and 2006 Outstanding Research Mentor Award, University of California, Los Angeles, presented by the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences.
